Just over one year after introducing the mobile app WeChat, forward momentum for the text and voice messaging service continues to accelerate. Although China's Internet giant Tencent hasn't made money from the app yet – it's free – big profits are considered just the matter of time.
Thirty year-old Cao Hua is just one of over 100 million WeChat registered users in China. That’s a user base bigger than the populations of Canada, Malaysia and Venezuela combined. In less than two years, this mobile phone app has grabbed a big piece of an already crowded market. WeChat combines the features of Skype, Instagram and iMessage—and its "push-to-talk" function can turn a phone into a walkie-talkie.
Cao Hua, Beijing Resident, said, "I use the WeChat platform mainly for a group messaging and sharing photos, the beauty of this is I do not have to have a laptop and PC around."

It’s literally shaking up the tech landscape in social networking. Using WeChat’s “Shake” plug-in, users shake their phones to connect with nearby WeChat users who’re shaking their phones at the same time. You can make a new friend with just a jiggle. The greatest feature for some users is its price. WeChat is free.
Cao Hua, Beijing Resident, said, "My cell phone’s monthly plan covers the internet service fee, so I don’t have to pay the text messaging or photo messaging surcharge for WeChat platform."
And the question is how a free app will turn profits for Tencent?
Xiang Li Gang, Secretary General of China 3G Industry Association, said, "We know Tencent’s QQ is China’s dominant instant messaging service and WeChat is compatible with QQ accounts, and that has helped the company hold a significant user base. As long as there is a large user base, and the app gains the hearts of users, there are always users willing to pay for WeChat’s possible extra service or VIP service down the road."

Profits may be the matter of time. Tencent already runs China’s biggest web portal, QQ.com—ranked 9th in the world overall based on traffic—and WeChat is helping Tencent expand into global markets through platforms like Apple’s App Store.
WeChat language support now includes English, Portuguese. According to Tencent, it ranks the top three at App Store’s social category in most of Southeast Asia countries.
Xiang Li Gang, Secretary General of China 3G Industry Association, said, "WeChat integrates push-to talk voice messaging, photo sharing, and supports location-based social plug-ins and so on. We have not found out other similar app’s service is stronger than WeChat yet, and that could mean a large potential outside of China."
In a company release, sent to CCTV, Tencent states: “We are carefully monitoring feedbacks from different countries and continuously enhancing our services. We will also start to open our platform and welcome third party developers to develop local apps on top.” In China, when asked whether willing to pay that service, users like Cao Hua says if the price is right, he’ll definitely consider it.
